Cooperstown : Cooperstown is internationally known as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and everyday countless baseball fans visit it, Doubleday Field, and the umpteen baseball collectibles shops that line Main Street. Even if you are not a baseball fan though, Cooperstown is a place worth seeing. It's the county seat of Otsego County, right on picturesque Lake Otsego. You'll find museums, theaters, art galleries, wineries, breweries, cider mills, and interesting little tourist shops in the town or close by, not to mention bat factories (the wood kind, that is). To see everything, you hop on a trolley, and for $3, you can ride the whole day. We particularly enjoy the many quaint, old houses in the village.

Aurora : Photos from our day trip to Aurora, NY. Aurora is a very lovely, quiet and picturesque town located on the shores of Cayuga Lake. It is also the home of Wells College, a nationally recognized liberal arts college. It's definitely worth your time to stop by and check out the homes and shops if you're in the area as this town is a real gem. Baldwinsville : Baldwinsville, New York, has a few older homes of interest but no real section of historical grandeur. It does have Lock 24 nearly in the center of town, which provides some interesting photo opportunities, along with a number of shops lining the edge of the Lock. On a whole, it's a nice town, but I wouldn't drive out of my way to visit it unless you're interested in the New York Lock system or one of the other attractions highlighted here.

Camden : Camden, New York is a smaller town northeast of Oneida Lake, in a sparsely populated region of Central New York. At one time, there must have been some money in Camden, judging from the number of large, older homes and churches there. What keeps it going now wasn't obvious to us, just that its glory days seem to be behind it. You could say about Camden what's true about a hundred little New York towns: The good news is that it's small and quiet, and the bad news is that it's small and quiet.

Caughdenoy Lock : Caughdenoy Lock is located across the Oneida River from the small hamlet of Caughdenoy, which seems to be just a few buildings at the intersection of Routes 12, 33, and 37. To be truthful, there wasn't a whole lot there to see, but the place seems popular enough with local fishermen.

Cazenovia : Cazenovia has never been a big town, but it seems to have always been a popular vacation spot, probably because it sits on the shore of pretty Lake Cazenovia. Some rich folk had their summer homes there, which accounts for some of the larger homes, and now there is also a small, independent Cazenovia College right off the main street. Tourists always seem to be in town, either browsing in the specialty stores or dining at the couple nice restaurants, the Brae Loch Inn and the Lincklaen House.

Cortland : For years, we considered Cortland, New York, as just the midway point between Syracuse and Binghamton; but after actually going there, we have changed our minds. Cortland has some very neat things to boast: the 1890 House and other elegant old homes on Tompkins Street; a nice old-fashioned downtown area; a few beautiful stone churches on or near (what else) Church Street; and the Cortland County Courthouse.

Elmira : You can tell just from the number of large, stone churches that Elmira used to be a thriving town in south central New York. It seems to be most known as the hometown of Mark Twain's wife, his summer retreat, and his final resting place. A few other famous folk came from Elmira as well—Hal Roach, Brian Williams, and Eileen Collins. What we liked was the great architecture we saw in the churches and civic buildings downtown. With its parks and location on the Chemung River, Elmira seems like a neat town.

Elmira College : Elmira College is not exactly well known, at least, we were not familiar with it. After strolling around the campus, we couldn't help but be impressed with the beautifully green, perfectly manicured lawns; the pretty central pond complete with a fountain; the many stately, matching brick buildings; and the life-size statues of Mark Twain and his wife Olivia (she attended when it was a woman's school). We highly suspect that the school's colors are purple and gold, considering anything that could be purple and gold, was, from the street signs to the door glass to the lawn barriers.

Norwich : Norwich is a gem of a town. It has many well-maintained older houses that come in all colors, in fact, Norwich overall is a very colorful place. It seems to have a genuine small town atmosphere too, almost like in the movie Back to the Future. Downtown you find the county courthouse, a movie theater, and some stores; and kids can still ride their bikes there to eat homemade ice cream.

Oswego : With an extra long history, nuclear power plants, and its annual Harborfest, Oswego holds a unique place in central New York. The city however is going through the same sort of evolution found in many surrounding towns: businesses and people have moved of out of the older sections. There are some wonderful, old stone buildings with great architecture to be found there--churches, government buildings, and private homes. Some are still being used, some unfortunately are not, and the old downtown section now has specialty stores and restaurants.

Owego : Owego, New York is a town with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it also has a lot of heavy truck traffic through some of its nicest sections. Sackets Harbor : Photos taken of the harbor as well as of shops and building along West Main Street. Sackets Harbor is a picturesque, little town located on the shores of Lake Ontario and the Black River Bay. At the time of the War of 1812, it was the U.S. Navy's most important shipbuilding center, the headquarters of the Navy on the Great Lakes, and it played a strategic role in winning that war. Nowadays the village of Sackets Harbor is home to some fine restaurants, quaint shops, numerous concerts, festivals, and other events year round, besides being a great place for water sports.

Seneca Falls : Here are photos from our day trip to Seneca Falls, New York. It was a disappointment to find out the Seneca Falls doesn't have falls. In fact, they only had some small falls years ago, which are now under water due to the canal system. They're also known as the birthplace of the women's rights movement. As we are more interested in the architectural history of towns, much of which no longer exists in Seneca Falls, we really didn't spend much time there. So, it could very well hold more promise than implied by this description and you may want to check this site to decide for yourself whether it's worth your time and gas money.

Sonnenberg : In the town of Canandaigua is a small mansion built by John Thompson, founder and president of what is now Citibank. The summer house is the focal point of a large piece of property complete with ponds, statues, and a large garden area. Sonnenberg is a happening place now that it's a non-profit organization and historic site. Besides the steady stream of tourists, Sonnenberg hosts weddings, art fairs, and various other functions. What also is happening, however, is good old-fashioned deterioration. Close up, you can't help but notice that the house, statues, ponds, fountains, etc., need much renovation. Still, it was an interesting place to visit just to see how the wealthy used to spend their summers.
